Supplication Upon Hearing Thunder
Explicitly established in Quran or Sahih Hadith as ruqyah/protection for this exact matter.
Thunder and lightning are mighty signs of Allah's divine power. When the noble companion Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr (r.a.) heard thunder, he would abandon speech and glorify Allah with words from the Quran (Muwatta Malik 1801, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 723, Sahih isnad). This is a well-established authentic Sunnah practice for seeking refuge in Allah during severe weather.
Muwatta Malik / Al-Adab Al-Mufrad Sahih
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِ
Translation (EN)
Glory be to Him whom the thunder glorifies with His praise, and the angels from the fear of Him.
How to Perform / When to Recite
Whenever thunder is heard, pause from speaking and recite with reverence: 'Subhan-alladhi yusabbihur-ra'du bi-hamdihi wal-mala'ikatu min kheefatih' (Glory be to Him whom the thunder glorifies with His praise, and the angels from the fear of Him). It is also important to seek shelter indoors as a practical safety precaution.
Important Safety Note: Ruqyah is a means of seeking Allah's protection and healing; it does not replace medical care. Never hang amulets or go to fortune-tellers/sorcerers.
