Protection from Nightmares and Terrifying Dreams
Explicitly established in Quran or Sahih Hadith as ruqyah/protection for this exact matter.
Distressing nightmares and panic during sleep are ploys from Satan intended to cause grief to the believer. The Prophet ﷺ clarified that true, good dreams are from Allah, while terrifying nightmares are from Satan.
Sahih al-Bukhari Sahih
Translation (EN)
A good dream is from Allah, and a bad dream is from Satan. So if any of you sees what he dislikes, let him spit lightly to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from its evil, for it will not harm him.
How to Perform / When to Recite
Upon awakening from a bad dream: 1) Spit dryly three times over your left shoulder. 2) Seek refuge in Allah from Satan and from the evil of what you saw ('A'udhu billah...'). 3) Turn over to sleep on your other side. 4) Do not mention the nightmare to anyone.
Important Safety Note: Ruqyah is a means of seeking Allah's protection and healing; it does not replace medical care. Never hang amulets or go to fortune-tellers/sorcerers.
